Moving home can be difficult, there are many things that you need to take into consideration so you don't mess a move up. Typically most people can use a moving home checklist, but for people moving home with pets the situation can be a little more difficult.

Even the smoothest of home moves can be stressful and this can be picked up by your pets which can then make them stressed. In this article, we will look at some of the ways in which you can make moving homes with your pets as stress-free as possible.

Crate training

Crate training is the safest way to transport your pet from one location to another, but most people don't take the time to crate train their pets. Crate training can be frustrating at the start so take your time and plan weeks if not months ahead of your move so you give your pets ample time to be ready.

You can go to training classes in your local area or you can check out Youtube to see how to crate train your pet.

With that said, some pets will not go into a crate and if your pet doesn't like it there are other harnesses and belts that can be used for moving them in the car. Just keep in mind these are not as safe.

When your pet is crate trained you can practice driving in the car with them for short distances which you can slowly increase over time. One of the biggest problems you will face when transporting your pets is that puppies, dogs and cats can all get motion sick very easily.

Taking your pets on increasing length drives will get them used to being in the car and also being in a crate in the car. Once again all of this should be done weeks or months before your move depending on the progression of your pet.

If you are only moving locally you can take your pet for a walk around that area before moving there too as it gives them time to learn the area and get used to it.

International moves or long distance moves are going to be different and here you will want to focus on taking adequate breaks so your pets have the chance to recover from moving. You should also let them out of their crates as often as possible when it is safe to do so.

As we mentioned above, dogs, cats are prone to being motion sick so keep an eye on them and if they look unwell you will need to stop. You can also help their motion sickness by turning down the music, opening the windows and driving in a calm matter.

If your journey takes longer because you have to stop more often then so be it, it's much better to get to your destination with happy pets than to get there with all of your pets being sick in the car.

Adapting to their new location

A new home is exciting but a little strange to your pets and they will need time to adjust to the new area. Cats should be kept in for the first two weeks of a new move and dogs can be let out in the garden but you will need to make sure they can't get out. Keep all locks and gates closed and let your animals get used to their surroundings in their own time.

If your pets are finding it difficult to adapt to their new surroundings make their areas familiar to them, you could leave your old shirts in their sleeping areas so they can smell a familiar smell.

You know your pets and if something doesn't look right take the time to find out what it is. Give your pets love, care and attention and they will love your new home just as much as you.
