Veterinarian Dr. Laurie Hess shares her tales as an exotic animal doctor, all while juggling family, friends, health, and a mysterious epidemic in her debut book, UNLIKELY COMPANIONS: The Adventures of an Exotic Animal Doctor (Or, What Friends Feathered, Furred, and Scaled Have Taught Me About Life and Love)

Dr. Hess is an internationally renowned expert in avian and exotic pet medical care. She has appeared on The Doctors, Inside Edition, Animal Planet and The Martha Stewart Show to discuss exotic animal pet care. In UNLIKELY COMPANIONS she narrates a hectic, life-changing week at the Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills, NY. Hess details her daily, round-the-clock schedule as the founder and owner of one of the only exotic animal hospitals in the area, and how she was able to achieve her dream of working and caring for exotics and educating pet owners everywhere.

With thoughtful discussions on love and relationships—with humans and pets—family, career, and a central mystery in which Dr. Hess tries to find the source of a mysterious illness plaguing sugar gliders across the country, UNLIKELY COMPANIONS is an inspiring look at a woman trying to do her best for all, from a pot-bellied pig to a newborn guinea pig. Part memoir, part mystery, and part day-in-the-life, this book will encourage readers to follow their dreams, treat all types of people (and pets) with love and respect, and how to fit it all into just one day.
